Oropedio (which means Plateau) is a rather large area around 840m high, surrounded by five diferrent mountains. In the 50’s and 60’s it hosted 10-13 thousand windmills, which were used for watering the land. The area is populated since the neolithic era (6.000 bce) and today is the home of several small farming villages. Oropedio played a major role during the 1821 revolution, in 1867 Cretan revolution as well as in WWII.
